Introduction to Coaching Skills

INTRODUCTION TO COACHING SKILLS

First up…
What exactly is coaching?

The main governing body for coaching is the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Their definition of Coaching is: “Coaching is partnering with individuals in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Program Vision and Learning Goals

This workshop will help you and team to start thinking and interacting differently with greater self awareness and more of an understanding of others. It is a fun, highly interactive morning, made up of three sessions.

In the first session coaching tools are showcased and participants are given a chance to reflect and to consider what they want from their career and lives, they think about what might get in the way, what options they have and they make a plan which will see them taking steps towards what they want.

The second session introduces coaching, using the International Coach Federation definition and list of core competencies. The difference between coaching and mentoring is discussed and the CURIOUSTM model is introduced. Participants then coach each other, usually in a goal from the first session. In the third session the facilitator dives into 5 core competencies, with particular attention to Active Listening, Powerful Questions and Direct Feedback.

The grand finale of the morning is a chance to practice the new skills again. The aim of the exercise is to have a constructive coaching style conversation around a conflict or challenging scenario. Participants divide into groups of 3 and are either given a scenario or can use their own.

Monthly Ongoing Sessions

The coaching approach is always long term so this is just the beginning. We suggest regular refreshers, something like monthly breakfast meetings to keep everyone motivated. We can facilitate these to get them going before handing over.
